The Dream is Over - All Whites

Ja, die Hoffnungen waren wirklich hoch, dass es Neuseeland schaffen würde, so schlecht standen die Chancen ja auch nicht. Aber es hat dann leider doch nicht gereicht: Nur ein 0:0 gegen Paraguay.

Der Kapitän des All Whites Teams hat sich heute morgen in einem Interview, kurz nach dem Spiel, sichtlich geknickt und mit Tränen in den Augen, bei den Neuseeländern entschuldigt. Dafür, dass sie es nicht geschafft haben und nun die Fans enttäuscht haben. Tja, so ticken die Kiwis, irgendwie symphatisch :-)


Und hier noch ein paar Zitate aus der Presse von heute (NZ Herald):

• They will now disperse, rightfully proud of their historic achievement of gaining three World Cup points.
• They have made the country proud and excited Kiwis' imaginations.
• Coach Ricki Herbert said: "I'm just so proud of these guys - to go out unbeaten at a World Cup. Will that ever happen again? I doubt it."

They go home undefeated - who picked that before the tournament - and put New Zealand football on the map. Some people around the world might now know exactly where on that map New Zealand is.
They also finished ahead of defending world champions Italy and showed that a small country at the bottom of the world with only a handful of professionals can compete with the giants of world football. It's just a shame they can't have a go at another one.

"Everybody played well, they all contributed on the highest level," said coach Ricki Herbert.

Anyway, well done All Whites!

PS: Übrigens, viele der Spieler der All Whites gehen einen ganz normalen Beruf nach, Fussballspielen ist also eher so eine Feierabendbetätigung. Alle Hochachtung, oder? Und gestern habe ich gelesen, dass die Transfersumme eines Spielers aus der Mannschaft von Paraguay höher ist, als die der ganzen Neuseeländischen Mannschaft! Ha, und dann noch vor Italien auf Platz 3 in der Gruppe, und nur wegen dem schlechteren Toreverhältnis! Nein, dass war wirklich klasse!
